Salvation Army Center Introduces New Worship Series

Released 24 February 2014

Celebrate Faith with The Salvation Army

Celebrate JesusThe Salvation Army's mission is fueled by the love of God. Here in Philadelphia, nine Salvation Army worship centers help our neighbors in need to see the vitality of life with God through weekly worship services as well as Christian education for youth and adults during Sunday morning services.

Lisa Collier, a longtime supporter and a leader of both youth and worship programs through The Salvation Army, saw a need in young adults for a greater connection with God and set out to create a program uniquely dedicated to this younger, more impressionable population.

"I work at The Salvation Army Camp Ladore with underprivileged teens and young adults each summer and through my camper's questions I was sensing a lack of spiritual depth, but a desire for it," said Collier. "There was a need for something that would draw them deeper in their spiritual commitment, and would also step out of the box of traditional worship to make it more relatable."

Several months later, The Salvation Army Philadelphia Citadel Corps Community Center introduced its "Celebrate Jesus" evening worship program for adults and children to worship together, study the spiritual disciplines, and apply them to their personal lives, thus living God's teachings. Each month, a guest speaker joins evening worship to lead prayers and discussion. The first meeting took place in January 2014. On Sunday, February 23, Salvation Army members gathered to celebrate faith with Colonel Janice Howard, Territorial Secretary for Spiritual Life Development with The Salvation Army USA Eastern Territory, based in West Nyack, New York.

"This monthly worship certainly targets the young adult group, but does not discriminate based upon age," said Collier. "Everyone can learn from one another. At the end of each session, I want everyone to go home and be thinking about how they can apply this month's teaching to their own life."

"This special program is very 'come as you are,'" said Major Tim Lavenbein, commanding officer of The Salvation Army Philadelphia Citadel Corps Community Center. "We want people to have a better understanding of how to apply God's work to your life, and that how something written so long ago is still practical today to all people."

The next Celebrate Jesus worship program will take place on Sunday, March 23. All services take place at The Salvation Army Philadelphia Citadel Corps Community Center on 5830 Rising Sun Avenue, Philadelphia from 6-7:30pm. For more information, call 215-722-5447.
